A magnificent panoramic view circuit of the Everest Region with challenging ascents of Mera Peak and Island Peak
Mera Peak and Island Peak via Amphu Lapcha Pass is the combining ultimate trekking and climbing challenge in the Himalaya of Nepal. Mera and Island peaks are two of the great Himalayan climbing adventures. Mera Peak stands at 6,470 metres above sea level and Island Peak at 6,165 metres and this is the adventure of a lifetime in the Himalaya’s offering you a unique chance to climb two awe-inspiring peaks on one expedition. Geographically, Mera and Island peaks are fairly close, however they are separated by the mountain chain dividing the Hunku and Khumbu Valleys. Mera Peak and Island Peak Climbing trip offers you the chance to visit one of the most beautiful and remote valleys in Nepal as well as the opportunity to cross the challenging and beautiful Amphu Lapcha Pass at 5780 metres. Although Mera Peak is slightly higher than Island peak, Mera peak is technically a straight forward climb. It is called a trekking peak but nothing with ropes, glaciers, crampons and ice axes is trekking and not to be underestimated. Mera peak is climbable for people without mountaineering experience but always best to come prepared with winter skills experience. The climb to the summit is a very strenuous, but steady, glacier climb with rewarding views of the Himalayas from the top.
We ascend Island Peak via the standard route, directly underneath the imposing south west face of Mount Lhotse, fourth highest mountain in the world. Though lower in altitude than Mera Peak, Island Peak is slightly more challenging. The ascent involves an easy scramble up to a rock ridge and then onto a glacier where fixed lines are used to climb the 45 degree snow slopes leading to the exposed summit ridge. The fabulous summit views include Mount Lhotse, Nuptse, Mt. Makalu and Ama Dablam. We follow the Chhukung Valley and join the Everest Base Camp trail at Dingboche, one of many Sherpa settlements we pass through on our return to Lukla then next day fly back to Kathmandu.
